Midcoast Mitten Tree and Charity Knitting

Midcoast Mitten Tree

Our major annual charity knitting event at Over the Rainbow Yarn is called the Midcoast Mitten Tree, in which we collect mittens (and hats, if you like) for all ages, and completely cover two wire-frame trees with them. Each year, we choose a color theme for our tree, and request that our knitters use that color of yarn. We collect mittens year-round. We proudly display the handiwork of our knitting community throughout the month of November, then donate the entire trees to AIO Food Pantry after Thanksgiving weekend. The Food Pantry distributes the hats and mittens to local families in need during the holiday season.

For this ongoing event, and likewise for ANY knitting which you wish to do for any charitable causes, we have the following policy:

You buy a skein of Berroco Vintage or Galway Worsted, then show us what you knit with it and tell us where it’s going. Leave it with us if it’s for the Midcoast Mitten Tree. It must be nearly a full-skein’s worth of knitting– if you’re going to make baby mittens, then you’ll probably want to make a few pairs. Then, we will replace the skein with one of the same type of yarn for free. We’ll replace it indefinitely, if you want to knit for charity forever.
