Spinning is one of those soothing, meditative, rhythmic activities that bring us joy and comfort in life. If you’ve ever wanted to hand-spin your own yarn, drop spindles have the advantages of being small, portable, and inexpensive.
In this class, we’ll learn to use a drop spindle to spin and ply yarn from wool roving. We’ll practice drafting the wool, introducing twist with a gentle spin, winding your yarn around the shaft of the drop spindle, and joining new pieces of fiber. We’ll work on getting into the rhythm of fluidly moving from one step to the next. Finally, we’ll talk about plying your singles with a reverse twist.
After taking this class, you’ll be able to knit with your very own one-of-a-kind hand-spun yarn!
In February, we’ve decided to make the Order of the Good Times the theme of the month, so we’ve planned classes in which you can let loose and try something new. The Order of the Good Times was founded in 1606 in Nova Scotia amongst a group of French settlers. The purpose was to get the people through the harsh winter by organizing social gatherings at which food and entertainment would be shared. It would be a morale boost and a reason to get out of the house in the winter time.
